West Sussex is looking for a dynamic Safeguarding Adults Board Chair with strong leadership skills to further strengthen the Board; embedding a culture of mutual challenge, enquiry and learning to improve the safety and quality of health, social care and wider services for adults living in West Sussex.

We are looking to appoint someone with demonstrable strategic experience who can help embed partnership working at all levels, who promotes collaborative working and who will co-ordinate partners to hold each other to account. You will need the skills, experience and credibility to work effectively with the most senior system leaders.

Applicants should be experienced and knowledgeable to work at a senior level to safeguard adults. You should possess the ability to lead, influence and motivate others. The successful candidate will be strategic and clear thinking, able to negotiate; support and challenge partners constructively to deliver high-quality safeguarding work across the partnership.

To apply for this post the applicant will have:

    • a relevant professional qualification
    • significant experience at operational and strategic level in a relevant field e.g. social care, health or criminal justice
    • a proven track record of effective leadership at strategic level
    • the ability to chair complex multi-agency discussions that result in assurances and changes in policy and practice to improve safeguarding
    • a sound and creative approach to ensuring effective governance of and between partnerships.

The Independent Chair of WSSAB is directly accountable to the Chief Operating officer of West Sussex County Council. The role requires a commitment of 2.5 days per month at £500 per day. Although you will not be a direct employee of the county council, HMRC regulations have defined this role as an “office holder” therefore payments will be made through the council payroll with deductions for Tax and NI taken at source.

This post will be reviewed after six months, with an initial term contract of three years; the post is subject to annual appraisal and an enhanced DBS check is required.
